About West Virginia Estate Settlements
In 1936 and 1937, court records for thirteen West Virginia counties were abstracted by the West Virginia Commission on Historic and Scenic Markers, the Works Progress Administration, and the Federal Emergency Relief Administration. Copies of these records were filed at the Department of Archives and History in Charleston, the Library of West Virginia University in Morgantown, and the DAR Library in Washington, D.C. Following this, the West Virginia Historical Society abstracted the estate settlement records from the records filed in the State Department of Archives and History, and offered them for publication in the West Virginia History Quarterly. These estate settlement records were arranged and printed in chronological order from the earliest date to 1850. This publication consists of an index to the estate settlement records, organized by county then name (surname, given). Details provided include the date and type of record, and occasionally relationship information.
