In North America the English surname has absorbed some cases of like-sounding cognates from other languages for example Dutch Kuiper . Americanized form of Jewish (Ashkenazic) Kupfer and Kupper (see Kuper ). Dutch: occupational name for a buyer or merchant Middle Dutch coper.
